Do a test patch on the back of the steel before applying any acid to the front face

Wiping steel with mild acid will age the steel.

Do a test sealing on the back before coating the faces

Rinse panels, of any acid residue
Interior panels may be clear sealed to prevent further oxidation

Start with a mild dilution of the HCl acid , for your test patch, do not proceed, until you are satisfied with the test patch results.
